David and Sin

Pastor George Stephens | June 16, 2024

“In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.” (2 Samuel 11:1, ESV)

I. A Victorious David

• He had established national religious practice with the permanence of the Ark of the Covenant in Jerusalem – 2 Samuel 6-7

• He had defeated a long list of enemies and enriched the nation - 2 Samuel 8

• He had shown favor to Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth encouraging national Unity – 2 Samuel 9

II. An Irresponsible David – 2 Samuel 11

• He had better things to do.

• He looked twice

• He Covered up with even greater sin

III. A Forgiven But Chastened David

“Thus says the LORD, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.’ ” David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” And Nathan said to David, “The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the LORD, the child who is born to you shall die.”” (2 Samuel 12:11–14, ESV)

• The death of the child but the birth of Solomon

• The loss of authority in his family

• The temporary loss of his kingdom and pride

• The promise of forgiveness
