Sermon Series: Saul & David, History That Matters

David As King

Pastor George Stephens | June 2, 2024

“In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the LORD said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel.’ ” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.” (2 Samuel 5:2–4, ESV)

What Made David a Great King?

I. A Focus on Reconciliation

“Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.” (2 Samuel 2:10, ESV)

“And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, “To whom does the land belong? Make your covenant with me, and behold, my hand shall be with you to bring over all Israel to you.”” (2 Samuel 3:12, ESV)

“Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth and mourn before Abner.” And King David followed the bier. They buried Abner at Hebron. And the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept.” (2 Samuel 3:31–32, ESV)

“And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them, as everything that the king did pleased all the people.” (2 Samuel 3:36, ESV)

II. Fulfilling Requirements

““When the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and mightier than you,” (Deuteronomy 7:1, ESV)

“And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, “You will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will ward you off”—thinking, “David cannot come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David.” (2 Samuel 5:6–7, ESV)

III. A Foundation of Request

“After this David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To Hebron.”” (2 Samuel 2:1, ESV)

Questions:

1.  Do you value unity? Who would you need to reach out to to reconcile and bring unity?

2.  Is there a big thing left undone in your spiritual life? What are your plans for closing that gap with God? Can you develop a plan?

3.  On a scale of 1-10 describe your interaction and communication with God. Is He communicating with you? Are you listening?
