David, The King of Prayer

I. A Foundation of Request

“After this David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To Hebron.”” (2 Samuel 2:1, ESV)

What makes David Different?

• He Asked

o Ten times, David does this…

o Previously seen in Judges, but from the entire nation…

o Saul does not…“He did not seek guidance from the LORD. Therefore the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.” (1 Chronicles 10:14, ESV)

o “Therefore Saul said, “O LORD God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, O LORD, God of Israel, give Urim. But if this guilt is in your people Israel, give Thummim.” And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped.” (1 Samuel 14:41, ESV)

• He Expected an answer

• He Received

o We Don’t have Urim and Thumim

o How We Receive Answers – the developed relationship.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105, ESV)

“The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.” (John 1:9, ESV)

• He Acted
