Sermon Series: Saul & David, History That Matters

Uzziah the Pretty Good

Pastor George Stephens | August 11, 2024

“Uzziah was sixteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jecoliah of Jerusalem. And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God, and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper.” (2 Chronicles 26:3–5, ESV)

Uzziah’s Heart

“And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away. The people still sacrificed and made offerings on the high places.” (2 Kings 15:3–4, ESV)

• A Lesser Standard – His father, Amaziah, but not David. “And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, yet not with a whole heart.” (2 Chronicles 25:2, ESV)

• A Learning Heart – He found a mentor and made himself a disciple.

• A Limited Influence – He doesn’t change the people

o Fatalism – “They won’t change anyway.”

o Humanism – “Every way is good”

o Pragmatism – “They chose their way.”

o Individualism – “I am responsible for me.”

o “Franciscan-ism” – “I’ll show them”

Uzziah’s Help

“God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabians who lived in Gurbaal and against the Meunites.” (2 Chronicles 26:7, ESV)

“… And his fame spread far, for he was marvelously helped, till he was strong.” (2 Chronicles 26:15, ESV)

Uzziah’s Hutzpah

“But when he was strong, he grew proud, to his destruction. For he was unfaithful to the LORD his God and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.” (2 Chronicles 26:16, ESV)
