Sermon Series: KING of Kings

Pastor George Stephens | December 24, 2023

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.” (Matthew 2:10–12, ESV)

“Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Revelation 19:11–16, ESV)

I. Of all of the Kings, Jesus is the King

• One of many

• Best of the many

• “Divine Right” theory

“To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him?” (Isaiah 40:18, ESV)

“To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might and because he is strong in power, not one is missing.” (Isaiah 40:25–26, ESV)

“who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.” (Isaiah 40:23, ESV)

Or is it something else?...

II. A Hebrew absolute

The amplified power of repetition…

In Greek “To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.” (1 Peter 5:11–12, ESV)

Or “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.” (John 6:47, ESV)

Compared to Hebrew “but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”” (Genesis 2:17, ESV)

Jesus REALLY is the King

“And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”” (Mark 15:39, ESV)

Jesus ALWAYS is the King

“so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,” (Philippians 2:10, ESV)

Questions:

1. Is Jesus just one of many kings in your life? What do you need to let go of to make Jesus King?

2. Can you identify a specific place in your life where Jesus will be recognized as King this week?

3. How can you use Christmas to remind a friend of Jesus’ Kingship?
