The Birth of Jesus Foretold
Luke 1:26-33 - "The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for youhave found favor with God. 31 And behold, you willconceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shallname Him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be calledthe Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will giveHim the throne of His father David; 33 and He will reignover the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom willhave no end.”
I. His name shows He is the “Son of Joseph” = HUMANITY
He was circumcised
“Brit Milah”
Luke 2:21 - "And when eight days had passed, before His circumcision, His name was then called Jesus, the name givenby the angel before He was conceived in the womb."
Genesis 17:11-12 - "And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin,and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me andyou. And every male among you who is eight days old shallbe circumcised throughout your generations."
II. His name shows He is the “Son of David” = ROYALTY
Redemption of the First Born
“Pidyon Haben”
Luke 2:22-23 - "And when the days for their purification according to the law of Moseswere completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to theLord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male thatopens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”)"
Luke 2:25-28 - "And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealedto him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law, then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God, and said"
Luke 2:29-32 - “Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A Light of revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”
Luke 2:29-31 - "And His father and mother were amazed at the things which werebeing said about Him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise ofmany in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed— and a sword willpierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from manyhearts may be revealed.”
Numbers 18:15-16 - "Everything that opens the womb, of all flesh which they offer to the LORD, both of man and beast, shall be yours; however the first-born ofman you shall surely redeem... And their redemption-money--from amonth old shalt thou redeem them--shall be, according to your valuation,five shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary"
II. His name shows He is the “Son of God” = DIVINITY
Purification after Childbirth
“Niddah / Tohorot”
Luke 2:24 - "And to offer a sacrifice according to what was said in the Law of the Lord, 'A pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons.'”
Luke 2:36-38 - "And there was a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years and had lived with her husbands even years after her marriage, and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers. At that very moment she came up and began giving thanks to God and continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem."
Leviticus 12:1-4 - "The Lord said to Moses: Say to the Israelites: If a woman conceives achild and gives birth to a son, she will be unclean for seven days—just as she is during her menstrual period. On the eighth day, the flesh of the boy’s foreskin must be circumcised. For thirty-three days the mother will be in a state of blood purification. She must not touch anything holy or enter the sacred area until her time of purification is completed."
