Carried to the Table: A Story of Unmerited Favor

Pastor Greg Twitchell | March 8, 2026

1 Samuel 20:9-16

9 And Jonathan said, “Far be it from you! If I knew that it was determined by my father that harm should come to you, would I not tell you?”

10 Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you roughly?”

11 And Jonathan said to David, “Come, let us go out into the field.” So they both went out into the field.

12 And Jonathan said to David, “The Lord, the God of Israel, be witness! When I have sounded out my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you?

13 But should it please my father to do you harm, the Lord do so to Jonathan and more also if I do not disclose it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. May the Lord be with you, as he has been with my father.

14 If I am still alive, show me the steadfast love of the Lord, that I may not die;

15 and do not cut off your steadfast love from my house forever, when the Lord cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.”

16 And Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the Lord take vengeance on David's enemies.”

1 Samuel 31: 1-6

Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

2 And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.

3 The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers.

4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.

5 And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him.

6 Thus Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, on the same day together.

2 Samuel 4:4

Jonathan, the son of Saul, had a son who was crippled in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled, and as she fled in her haste, he fell and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

2 Samuel 9:1-5

And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?”

2 Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David. And the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” And he said, “I am your servant.”

3 And the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him?” Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet.”

4 The king said to him, “Where is he?” And Ziba said to the king, “He is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar.”

5 Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar.

6 And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, “Mephibosheth!” And he answered, “Behold, I am your servant.”

7 And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.”

8 And he paid homage and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I?”

9 Then the king called Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master's grandson.

10 And you and your sons and your servants shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce, that your master's grandson may have bread to eat. But Mephibosheth your master's grandson shall always eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

11 Then Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so will your servant do.” So Mephibosheth ate at David's table, like one of the king's sons.

12 And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all who lived in Ziba's house became Mephibosheth's servants.

13 So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate always at the king's table. Now he was lame in both his feet.

Carried to the Table

by Leeland

I was carried to the table

Seated where I don't belong
Carried to the table Swept away by His love
And I don't see my brokenness anymore
When I'm seated at the table of the Lord
I'm carried to the table The table of the Lord

Wounded and forsaken I was shattered by the fall
Broken and forgotten Feeling lost and all alone
Summoned by the King Into the Master's courts
Lifted by the Savior And cradled in His arms

Fighting thoughts of fear

Wond'ring why He called my name
Am I good enough to share this cup

This world has left me lame
Even in my weakness The Savior called my name
In His holy presence I'm healed and unashamed

I was carried to the table

Seated where I don't belong
Carried to the table Swept away by His love
And I don't see my brokenness anymore
When I'm seated at the table of the Lord
I'm carried to the table The table of the Lord

Psalm 40:1-10

My Help and My Deliverer

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

1 I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.

4 Blessed is the man who makesthe Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!
5 You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them; yet they are more than can be told.

6 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.
7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:
8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

9 I have told the glad news of deliverance  in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord.
10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.

Genesis 4:1-8

Cain and Abel

1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.”

2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground.

3 In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground,

4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering,

5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.

6 The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?

7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, and you must rule over it.”

8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.

Peace Among God's Family

Pastor Neil Murphy | February 15, 2026

Main Idea: Jesus brings peace among members of God’s family.

1. We were cut off from God’s family.

a. Ephesians 2:11-12 – The Gentiles were cut o; from God’s family.
b. Outside of Christ, all of us are cut o; from God’s family.

2. Jesus made us part of God’s family.

a. Ephesians 2:13-18 – Through Jesus, Gentiles are brought into God’s family.
b. Through Jesus and His sacrifice, we are now part of God’s family and we have
a reason to live at peace with one another.

3. Jesus dwells in God’s family.

a. Ephesians 2:19-22 – Along with Jews, Gentiles are now “fellow citizens” in
God’s Kingdom and being built into a “dwelling place for God by the Spirit”.
b. All Christians are citizens of God’s Kingdom and being built into His dwelling
place! This brings peace.

JOB 1:13-22, 2: 7-10

I. TESTIMONY OF GOD'S GOODNESS

1. Loss, health, sickness

2. PRAY and GOD shows up!

3. Be a light to those around us no matter the circumstances.

4. Give God praise and thank him for our circumstances.

JAMES 1:12“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him”.  What a promise!

ROMANS 8:28“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

God wants good for us and that He has a plan.

EPHESIANS 5:19-20“Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and giving praise in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”

This is the key.  It’s pretty easy to thank God for the good things.  But do we praise and thank Him for the bad things?  For all things?

1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18 - "Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Who wrote this?  Paul.

During what part of his ministry?  Toward the end.  So he had endured: suffering, stoning, beatings, imprisonment, shipwreck, hunger, snake bite and all kinds of abuse.  Yet here he is telling the Thessalonian Church members to give thanks for the good and the bad!

II. GIVE THANKS

1. Asked God to help

2. Pray & giving thanks for your circumstance

3. Praise God for the hardships (be specific)

4. Thank God for allowing it to happen (be specific)

III.  THINGS GOD DOES IN OUR LIVES AS A RESULT

1. God inhabits your praise

2.  Blessings will come if you are faithful and trust

3.  Prayers are answered

4.  God moves in our lives deeply to affect our very core

5.  Time to go deeper in my Bible Study

6.  Time developing a deeper and more consistent prayer life.

What a blessing to walk with JESUS day in and day out.

Helen Keller, once said, “I thank God for my handicaps, for through them I have found myself, my work and my God.”

IV. LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES

1. Hellen Keller

2. We don't get to choose our circumstances.

3.  We do choose our attitude.

4. We each get to choose how we respond to difficulty.

a.  Are you going to cry and complain because you didn’t get your way?

b.  Or will you choose to have a mature God honoring response?

JOB 1: 21-22“Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.  In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.”

V. APPLICATION

1. A fallen earth - Adam and Eve

2. Responding to challenges

3. “Give thanks in all circumstances and for all circumstances.”

MATTHEW 5:45 - “so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust[1]”

What will you do during your challenges?

o   Curse God and die

o   Give Him praise

o   Preach Christ

o   Sing and praise God

MATTHEW 6:9-10 - "Our Father, who art in Heaven; Hallowed be your Name; Your Kingdom come, Your will be done"

Do you mean it when you pray those words?  Lord, “your will be done”, even if it’s not what you want?  Or if it means trials of many kinds?

JAMES 4:15 - “Lord, if it’s your will, we will live and do this or that”.

Praising God in and for bad things, represents a response to suffering that may not feel natural but is nonetheless faithful. And the more we worship God in and out of suffering, the more we form a response of praise in any circumstance.

I have grown so much through my trials.  I believe that because of these things, I am:

o   Stronger in the Lord

o   Stronger in my relationships

o   Stronger in my dependence upon Him

o   Stronger in my empathy toward others

o   Stronger in my prayer life

o   I have less stress, more joy and better relationships

o   And have had time to reflect on my life, my goals, and direction.

God is good and greatly to be praised!

JOHN 16:33“In this world you will have trouble.”

Trust in God, and give him praise, He will see you through!

Barbara Johnson: “If things are tough, remember that every flower that ever bloomed had to go through a whole lot of dirt to get there.”

Matthew 11: 2 - 30

2 Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” 4 And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers[a] are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. 6 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? A man[b] dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet?[c] Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written,

“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.’

11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,[d] and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear,[e] let him hear.

16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,

17 “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”[f]

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

20 Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.[g] 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

The Unrighteous Made Righteous

Pastor Neil Murphy | January 18, 2026

1) If we think we’re “innocent”, we’re actually guilty.

a. Vv.9-12 – The Pharisee considers himself “innocent” and superior to those
who he considers “guilty” because of who he is and what he does.
b. Do we consider ourselves “right in God’s sight” and better than others
because of who we are and what we do?
c. V.14 – Those of us who consider ourselves “innocent” before God based on
who we are and what we do are actually guilty.

2) If we acknowledge we’re guilty, we’re declared innocent!

a. V.13 – The tax collector knows he is a sinner and not worthy to be in God’s
presence because of who he is and what he has done.
b. Do we consider ourselves to have oNended a holy God in our thoughts,
words, and actions?
c. V.14 – Those of us who admit to God that we are guilty are the ones who are
declared innocent!

Main Idea:
If we think we’re innocent on our own, then we’re guilty; but if we acknowledge we’re guilty before God, we’re declared innocent!
